Today was quite busy. First, I had to get up early to sing at 8am mass, which went well. Then we all came home to clean and straighten the house because I had my piano recital here at noon. That also went well (overall, the kids could've practiced their songs a bit more, but aside from that...). Then I ate a bite for lunch before Mom and I headed over to Buffalo for auditions.
In case you hadn't heard, Mom and I were auditioning for roles in BCT's summer production of "The King and I." We both want the lead, but are willing to take any role just to take part and have fun. Anyways, we got there, said our hellos to the people we knew (for Mom, that was her "Charlie Brown" castmates, for me, that was one of my students, Jackson, who was auditioning). We sat and filled out our bio sheets, got our pictures taken, and went inside. I was more than excited because it's been two years since I did a show last and the director (Tory) was my director for "Guys and Dolls." He was so much fun, yet knew when to get serious as well. We did our dance, or movement audition first. That is always the worst part for me. This year, however, it was fairly simple. We did a very short dance that was more for characterization than it was for ability. The only part of this that was a little nerve-wracking was that everyone else got to go in groups of 4. Matt (Jackson's dad, who was also auditioning) and me were in a group of 2.
After that, we did our song. Overall, mine ("Embraceable You") went well. I blanked for a word or two, but then it all came back to me. I also was pleasantly surprised to see that my range was so high (it was a high B). Mom also did a nice job with her song ("Matchmaker"), but again, also blanked for a sec. Everyone else seemed to do really well, too, with a few exceptions ( a couple of girls who were so nervous, they were whispering the words to their song, another girl who was trying way too hard to get a specific part that she came with her hair up and in "costume", ala, her character, and another woman that was Ms. Cabaret Lounge Singer. She came complete with attitude and her very own piano player-I sincerely hope she doesn't get cast).
After the singing came the acting. Tory got out these scripts with print no bigger than this ...seriously. It was hard to read, but we did our best. We had to act out our scene, then separate and when given a situation, say "Come here" over and over and over again. That also went fine. It was interesting to see everyone's interpretation to the situation they were given-you are star-crossed lovers, you are talking to your dog who just pooed on the carpet, you love and hate the other person, etc. Then it was over. I breathed a sigh of relief, went and said a few more hellos/goodbyes and then headed out.
We are supposed to hear from Tory by Wednesday night, although after we left, they shut the doors to the Performing Arts Center and were said to be casting already! Please pray that I get a good part!
