For the next three weeks, students at our school are learning to rollerskate during Phy. Ed. It is fun to watch their progress from the beginning (looking like Bambi learning to walk) to the end (skating around the gym, listening to "HSM", with ease). I told the kids I would come in and skate with them one day...little did I realize, they would remember. "Mrs. Pavlenko, you said you would skate with us sometime on a Friday and we don't have school next Friday, so are you gonna skate with us?" These kids have incredible memories.
So there we were...skating around the gym, some of us going faster than others, but all having fun. It just really brought me back to my grade school days at St. Tim's, taking our end of the year field trip to the Monti Roller Rink...spending time with friends, eating nachos, playing the dice game, and trying to find someone of the opposite sex to skate with during those "slow" songs with the starry lighting. So, our gym doesn't have starry lighting (they are ugly, giant fluorescents), there are no nachos (we have a concession stand, but it is used more for a school store than anything else-want a pencil?), and no dice. But the Kindergartners enjoyed the most important part of what I enjoyed about skating-spending time with each other.
