I have choir practice tonight. I love choir, love to sing (especially now that I'm singing alto), but have a slight problem with going to rehearsal. There is this girl that goes and, in my opinion, should not be part of choir. It's not that she's a bad person and she has an okay voice, but when we are at practice, she won't shut up and focus on the job at hand. She is always talking during breaks and likes to eavesdrop as well. Now for those of you who know me, I love to socialize, but I believe there is a time and a place (like at the end of rehearsal). She has a disability and has an aide with her 24/7, so that may play a part in her distractability. The Sundays that we sing are even worse. She waves at people she knows from the risers, oohs and aahs over cute newborns, and plays with the director's music stand, turning it back and forth, back and forth. AHHHHHHHH!!!
And she's not the only one. We also have an older gentleman who can't even get up on the risers without help. He is also a very nice man, but has a passable voice at best. He is off-key much of the time and can't really read the music or even follow along.
I love our director. I think she does a fantastic job. However, I miss the days of having to audition to be in choir. Whether it was high school, college, or even our church choir a few years ago, you tried out by singing a prepared piece, a spontaneous piece, and some scales for the director. I just feel like our choir has turned into a bunch of misfits...calling Rudolph and Hermey, if you're interested, come and join us!
